The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Yachtmaster qualification is internationally recognised as a reliable testimony of competence for a skipper. Our Fast Track Yachtmaster Adventure is an intensive programme of theoretical sailing instruction combined with extensive practical sailing experience. We offer an opportunity to learn on Morwenna in a manner that is deeper and richer than that offered elsewhere.
The sailing course is designed to take a relatively inexperienced sailor to that of a commercially endorsed, qualified Yachtmaster. At the end of the course, the successful yachtsman will have the necessary certification and abundant practical experience to begin a career as a professional yacht skipper.
The Traditional Sailing Company's Yachtmaster training is unique. Each participant will be comprehensively trained to sail a traditional gaff rigged vessel and a bermudan rigged modern cruising yacht. The programme is designed to present sailing in a range of conditions and to develop the incomparable experience of entering and departing a multitude of European ports and harbours along the Atlantic seaboard and the Mediterranean Sea.
The course starts in the Solent and soon crosses the English Channel heading south along the coastline of the Bay of Biscay, westwards tracking the Spanish coastline to Cape Finisterre, then southerly visiting various Portuguese ports then around Gibraltar and into the Mediterranean Sea. The objective is to reach Marseille, where the final examination will take place.
Everyone will take responsibility as skipper, learning from the full range of challenges that presents, all under the watchful eye of our fully qualified instructors. Each day will present new waters, new harbours, different weather and different people. There is a range of possibilities that cannot be matched by an equivalent course in the Solent, and that means a more robust training.
The course commences in Southampton in early October. It begins with courses on VHF radio, sea survival and first aid. The sailing soon starts and Morwenna winds her way down, across the English Channel, the Bay of Biscay and round the Iberian peninsula in to the Mediterranean Sea. Final destination: Marseille.
The course has not been designed to follow a specific path that means a certain qualification has been achieved by a certain date. Instead, everything that needs to be learned by the end of the course will be taught, revised and consolidated. Embarking of the Traditional Sailing Fast Track Yachtmaster Adventure is something that should be looked at as a whole, not as a series of lesser qualifications.
Successful participants will gain the following qualifications:
